Traumatised neighbours’ terror as murder cops swarm street after reports of man carrying axe and hammer

Traumatised neighbours told of their terror as cops swarmed a quiet residential street after reports of a man carrying an ‘axe and hammer’.

Officers raced to Falside Crescent in Bathgate after the alarm was raised at around 8pm on Monday, July 5.

A 42-year-old man was found dead following an alleged disturbance and a 32-year-old man was arrested in connection with the death.

It is understood part of the disturbance took place in the garden of a property on the street.

One neighbour who lives across the street watched on as the horror unfolded just yards from his front door.

He said: “It was madness.

“My wife was shouting saying it’s all kicking off.

“She was telling me to go and try to help, but I couldn’t,

“Someone had called the police by that point.”

The neighbour said the man who died had only lived at the property for a few weeks.

He said: “I’d just say hello to him and a wee bit of chat but didn’t know his name.

“He had only been living there three or four weeks.

“He seemed like a nice enough guy.

“The emergency services team did everything they could to try and save him.
