Newborn baby died in bed with dad 2 months after mum died

A newborn baby has tragically died in bed with his father just two months after his mother passed away. The family of young Dexter Khan-Barnes has revealed their heartbreak, announcing that he and his mother are “together now”.

Laura Barnes suddenly passed away after suffering a blood clot following the birth of Dexter via caesarean section. A few weeks later, her family had to face more tragedy when baby Dexter died in his sleep.

Jennifer, Laura’s devastated mother, said that Laura’s greatest wish was to be a mother. She added that it was at least comforting to know that Laura and Dexter were now reunited, despite being robbed of the chance to meet each other in their lifetimes.

Dexter was born at 32 weeks and spent six weeks in the neonatal unit before being discharged with his father, Shane Khan. An inquest into the baby’s death today revealed that Dexter was checked over by a nurse before being put to sleep in his father’s bed next to his 14-month-old brother.

Shane says he slept across the foot of the bed. According to LancsLive, coroner Richard Taylor said Shane woke up at 5:30 a.m. and noticed that Dexter was not moving normally. He then realized that Dexter’s arms were limp and his eyes were discoloured. The baby was rushed to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.

A post-mortem performed by pathologist Dr. William Simmons was unable to determine a cause of death and found no evidence of prior illness or injury that could have contributed to the death.

Mr Taylor concluded that it is not possible to completely exclude accidental air obstruction as a contributing factor to Dexter’s death. Therefore, the cause of death remains unknown. The coroner’s report stated that Dexter died on July 30, 2022, at Royal Blackburn Hospital after being found unresponsive at home, in the bed he shared with his sibling.
