Man ‘gunned down’ outside supermarket as police rush to scene of ‘utter chaos’

Murder squad detectives are investigating after a man was “gunned down” tonight as emergency services rushed to what was described as a “scene of chaos”.

At least one person is said to have died, after a reported shooting outside a supermarket in Mexborough, Doncaster, in Yorkshire.

The area outside the Farmfoods store was cordoned off for a painstaking forensic examination after the incident unfolded around 5pm. 

Armed cops descended on the area as reports of a shooting flooded in. 

A white police tent has since been set up nearby.

Yorkshire Ambulance sent various resources to the scene, but according to people there the victim has died at the scene desperate attempts to revive him.

There was intense police activity around a silver Land Rover Discovery, but it is not yet clear if the vehicle is connected to what happened. 

Locals say the victim is a man, in his 20s. But police have not yet confirmed any details.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as “utter chaos”.

Officers have been seen going into a house and a small crowd of people is by the police cordon.

Footage shows police talking to one bare-chested man who appeared to have stripped off his shirt and be confronting them.

Another resident described the victim as having been “gunned down” in the street.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue also attended the incident with firefighters assisting police with screens to protect the crime scene.

South Yorkshire Police said:” Police were called to Wath Road, Mexborough, at 4.46pm today (Monday) following reports of a shooting.

“Officers are currently at the scene as investigations continue.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has any information which may help the investigation, is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 495 of 11 January 2021.”
