Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garrawayhas reflected on her husband Derek Draper’s fight with coronavirus.
Derek, 54, was admitted to hospital last year before being transferred to an intensive care unit as his condition rapidly deteriorated leaving him with damage to his lungs, heart, liver and kidneys.
Last year, Derek was placed in a medically induced coma but now lies in a minimum state of consciousness meaning he cannot talk or walk.
In a new revelation on today’s edition of Good Morning Britain, Kate said that Derek is undergoing more tests and is now more responsive as he recovers from the virus at home.
She told hosts Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid: “We are very clear now that he does understand everything really, and understands everything that I tell him about.”
Kate later revealed that Derek is still unable to communicate and is not able to respond to his family.
She said: “We are very clear now that he does understand everything really, and understands everything that I tell him about.
“He can’t respond still and communicate and Derek’s been having lots more tests of things.”
Kate continued: “We went to the hospital a few weeks ago, (which was) the first time he’d seen medics outside of the home,” before adding that it was a “very long day” for Derek with tests on his respiratory system.
Explaining the tests, the former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! campmate added: “[They] asked him to hold his breath and release his breath, he did absolutely everything they asked of him.
“Also just reactions to things and reactions to the children, his responses are appropriate.
“It does really feel that way as if he is reacting.”
