A man has been arrested after he allegedly fractured an 8-year-old girl’s skull with a shovel and raped her.
Cane L. Madden, 29, has been charged by police over the shocking incident that took place in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, on Friday.
Officers responded to the call at around 4.30pm after receiving a report that the girl had been attacked and had her iPad stolen at a home in the city’s California neighbourhood.
The girl was rushed to nearby Norton Children’s Hospital where doctors confirmed she had suffered significant injuries and been subject to a serious sexual assault.
Madden was stopped by police following reports that he had been seen in the area at the time of the attack.
Officers say he provided them with “intimate details” about the physical and sexual assault when questioned.
Madden was arrested at 1am on Saturday and been charged with first-degree rape, assault and robbery.
He is now being held on a $1m (£831,000) bond.
The Courier Journal reported that Madden has a history of carrying out various assaults but was ruled incompetent to stand trial.
Madden was due to to stand trial in a May theft and burglary case, according to court records.
He will appear before a judge at 9 a.m. on Monday.
