Walford is getting a new face in the form of legendary actor Ade Edmondson, who’s joining EastEnders as a brand new love interest for Jean Slater (Gillian Wright).
Ade will play Daniel Cook and he’s already begun filming, with scenes due to air in summer. This may give hope for fans over Jean’s cancer storyline, as this means we know she will at least still be in the show for the next few months.
Daniel is said to have a ‘wicked sense of humour’, the light against the shade that is Jean’s battle with ovarian cancer.
At first, Jean is unsure about Daniel but as he offers his support in his own unique way, Jean warms to him and the pair strike up a bond.
It’s about time Jean had some happier storylines, having also recently been the centre of an attempted suicide plot with her son Sean Slater (Rob Kazinsky).
Ade is excited about joining the soap, seeing it as a right of passage as an actor.
He said: ‘There were only fifteen boys on my drama course at Manchester Uni, and I’ll be the third to appear in EastEnders – so I feel it’s a kind of tradition! The other two being Tom Watt (Lofty Holloway) and Paul Bradley (Nigel Bates).’
Exec producer Jon Sen added: ‘Adrian’s a phenomenal talent who will bring his unique blend of intelligence, warmth and humour to the role of Daniel. We’re all over the moon he’s coming to Walford and can’t wait for this love story to hit screens later this year.’
